I have some friends who aren’t with us anymore who were Bowie devotees, and I feel like going to the grave and sharing the news with them, because I know even in the grave they would weep. It’s that profound. I’m sure you’ve observed some of the UK media that’s like, “Well, we can’t have this. That’s enough blubbering, now. It’s getting childish.” No, motherfucker, the sky fell. The sun went out. Feel the weight of this. He was a sentinel, exploring the human condition — the spirit. Science and Nietzche had put us in a place now where we were considering our experience in a very different way, but the church and science couldn’t explain everything. So here we are in modern society, in our glass and concrete buildings, all of a sudden going, “What’s going on? What is this? What is this longing I have?” Robert Blythe said it very eloquently. He said, “When men and women lost touch with wild animals, that’s when things started to go awry.” If you don’t feel the weight of that, then you have no heart. And here’s an artist who came through leading that parade of individuals that were feeling that sentiment and giving us a text to live by. I’ve been raised by David Robert Jones. He was my father, the father of many of us. He informed our spiritual beliefs, our dress codes, our philosophies of living.

A Space Oddity: David Bowie, the Legend
We were shocked to learn of music legend David Bowie's untimely death Sunday. He died yesterday at 69, after an 18-month battle with cancer. Bowie's music spanned four decades, impacting generations of music lovers.
He was born David Robert Jones on 8 January 1947, in Brixton, London. His mother, Margaret Mary "Peggy", was from Kent, and his father, Haywood Stenton "John" Jones, was from Yorkshire. As a child, Bowie quickly showed his creativity and imagination as well as true musical talent. At 15 and a guitar player, he formed his first rock-and-roll band, playing local youth gatherings and weddings. Even as a teenager, Bowie knew that he wanted to become a big star.
Bowie was a member of quite a number of bands, and released a few singles with little success until his 1969 legendary Space Oddity album quickly became a UK top five hit. He went on to release two phenomenally successful albums, Hunky Dory (1971), and The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972).
"I don't know where I'm going from here but I promise it won't be boring" - David Bowie.
David Bowie did the unxexpected, and took chances with his art. He reinvented himself time and time again over the years, and dazzled us with his presentation at each turn. He provided many people with a new perspective on life, helping them step out of the box and try different things.
Many of Bowie's lyrics and appearances were futuristic. Not only did he sing about the future, he was also very vocal about about the future of mankind, and of the music industry that he commanded.
To quote the Oakland Tribune (November 6, 1972): "Bowie is made for the stage".
Bowie's songs take people back to the time and place they first heard them. They remember when they were first introduced to his music, and how it made them feel.
How did Bowie's songs affect you? What Bowie song will you be singing today? Let us know in the comments below.

It’s Guest Blog Wednesday featuring Indrani:
"On Being Discovered / Mentored by Icons"
When I was a student, David Bowie phoned up, out of the blue. I’d just arrived back in NYC, exhausted from my commute from Princeton, in time to hear, “Some guy on the phone says he’s David Bowie.” A prank call, no doubt. Then, David’s charming voice: “I’ve been following your work for several years and I’m a fan.” I was shocked. Though I’d passionately pursued my photography for years, it was mainly published in underground magazines and I was majoring in cultural anthropology, uncertain of my direction in life....

Hozier Covers David Bowie Live
Though the loss of David Bowie was absolutely devastating, it's great seeing all the wonderful musical tributes still coming through!
We can now add a new one to that list, done by the one and only Hozier!
This past week during a show, Hozier briefly talked about Bowie before launching into a cover of David's hit "Young Americans." As with all of Hozier's covers, he completely made the song his own and it's a beautiful rendition!
Check it out below!

David Bowie is gone. People who grew up loving his music for five decades are distraught; people who never considered themselves fans still find themselves oddly affected. The outpouring of grief has been both heartening and heartbreaking, but what is it about this larger than life figure that has commanded the devotion of so many?
Bowie had endless reach, and his influence permeates almost every aspect of popular music. His contributions are wildly varied. He played with perceptions of gender, shifting between forms with fluid grace, making androgyny cool. There was the spectacle of his live shows: mime, make-up, and drama, never content just to play the songs. The Berlin trilogy was arguably the most innovative period in his career. Along with Tony Visconti and Brian Eno he cooked up what had become known as the Berlin Sound, a blend of pop, rock, funk, and European electronica that made albums like Heroes, Low, and Lodger so futuristic. In 2002 Bowie even predicted the impending dominance of file-sharing, saying that “music itself will become like running water or electricity”.
