God Bless The Girl – „The Next Day Extras”

Als am Ende des Jahres 2013 zu dem schon recht üppig gefüllten „The Next-Day“-Album noch eine Extra-Ausgabe mit neuen Stücken und Remixen auf dem Markt geworfen worden ist, schwankten die Gefühle zwischen Freude auf die neuen Stücke und Angst, dass es sich bei dieser Veröffentlichung nur um auf die Spitze getriebene kommerzielle Resteverwertung handelte. Tja und die Wirklichkeit liegt wahrscheinlich irgendwo zwischen diesen beiden Polen. Zumindest war man als Sammler gezwungen, sich das zu diesem Zeitpunkt nicht ganz billige Produkt ein zweites Mal ins Regal zu stellen.

Zum Teil hat es sich aber gelohnt: „Lost in Love“ (Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy for the DFA) gehört m.E. zu dem Besten was in dieser Phase das Licht der Welt erblickt hat und schlägt das Original um Längen. „Atomica und „God Bless The Girl“ sind wahrscheinlich am ehesten der Lodger Phase zuzuordnen, kommen zwar solide, aber dennoch recht konventionell daher. „God Bless The Girl“ wäre laut Visconti knapp auf The Next Day veröffentlicht und hatte es letztendlich dann doch nur als Bonus zu der japanischen CD-Version gebracht. Bei all den TND-Aufnahmen stellt sich für mich aber dennoch die Frage, ob da nicht mehr drin gewesen wäre. Vielleicht hätte sich Bowie zu „The Next Day“ besser mit anderen jüngeren Musikern z.B. Arcade Fire, TV on The Radio oder James Murphy zusammengetan. Wer weiß, was dann aus dieser Platte und auch den „The Next Day Extras“ geworden wäre.

Da die „The Next Day“-Extras bislang immer noch nicht offiziell auf Vinyl erschienen sind, blieb dann auch das auf der diesjährigen Geburtstagsfeier gewünschte „God Bless The Girl“ unerfüllt. Das bereits im Dezember bestellte Bootleg wurde mit einem Dreher in der Hausnummer irgendwo im Umland von Berlin eingelagert und erst Ende Januar zugestellt. Die Erfüllung des Wunsches wird hiermit nachgeholt und wenn alles gut läuft dann auch im Januar 2021: „God Bless The Girl“, God Bless The Party, God Bless The Ufer!

Ich habe The Next Day seit Jahren nicht gehört.
God Bless the Girl ist ein wunderbarer Song ❤️💕♥️, für mich wirklich der beste des Albums. Ich zähle ihn einfach zum Album, da ich eh die japanische Version habe, unter anderem...

It's like despite all the bad things happening around her and her advancing years, she continues to belive and spread the word. Fire turns to water, light turns to darkness, wonder turns to danger. Bittersweet imagery.

What intrigues me, though, is the "I don't wanna hurt you, just wanna have some fun " lyric, like Bowie is singing from the perspective of someone mocking or toying with her. Maybe he feels that's she's wasting her time worshipping God... Or maybe it's about a fan of Bowie who worships him like a god, and is always spreading the gospel of David Bowie, and he himself goes on the forums to mock her.... The lyric would make sense then.


IMO, it recalls the gospel style chorus of Underground and Madonna's Like a Prayer


Visconti: 'God Bless The Giri' had the working title 'Gospel' for a very long time until it was finished towards the end of recording. It is such an energised track. At one point it was on 'The Next Day' and moved up and down the tracklisting, then it was off the album, then back on, but ultimately it was designated to be a bonus track for the Japanese album release.

"God bless the girl" ist kein Song, der mich besonders anspricht. Eher konventionell, da stimme ich @sway99 zu. Die Lyrics und die Beschreibungen habe ich auch gelesen. Nu ja.
